The 2000 Guineas The 2000 Guineas is the first of the five English classic flat races for three year old thoroughbred horses.

Rowley_Mile


The race is open to colts and fillies and is run in early May at Newmarket racecourse over the famous Rowley Mile.
The race is run at the same meeting as another classic race which is the equivalent race for the flillies only which is called the 1000 Guineas.
Although this race is open to both colts and fillies it is the colts that contest this race as the fillies of this class always opt for the fillies only option of the 1000 guineas.

The race was first run in 1809 five years beforer the introduction of the equivalent race for both fillies.

The 2000 guineas was named so because the prize money for winning the race was 2000 Guineas.
