The Charlie Hall Chase is open to 5 year olds and upwards and is a national hunt chase.

The race is a Grade 2 chase over three miles and one furlong with 18 fences to be jumped.
Although the race has carried the name of the race horse trainer since 1978 and prior to that was called Wetherby Pattern Chase and then the Emblem Handicap Chase.

Looks like a competitive renewal of this event with the likes of last years winner Nacarat, Diamond Harry,Poquelin and Time for Rupert all with good chances. Unless the field breaks up this race could well have pointers to the many of the big races later in the season.

Race Preview

Nacarat

This top class chaser was victorious in this race last year. Set to carry top weight in this race this year with 10lbs higher to carry will make it a more difficult task this year.
That said this horse is a consistent type who ran well in good races last season. A good 4th to Long Run in the King George at Kempton. The horse then went on to win the grade 1 Totesport bowl at the Aintree festival and finished the season with a 4th in the Punchestown Guinness Gold Cup.

Diamond Harry

This 8 year old was a top class hurdler who has turning into a top class chaser winning the HENNESSY GOLD CUP CHASE at Newbury in November last season. He has not been seen on the track since that race but is expected to perform up to his class on his return and looks a worthy favorite.

Poquelin

Good horse and the first string from the powerful Paul Nicholls stable. 4th in last seasons Ryanair at the festival and will come here fit and ready to do his work and should be well supported in the betting market.

Weird Al

Following a really good novice season this horse was a touch disappointing last season. After a good dead heat win in the COLIN PARKER MEMORIAL INTERMEDIATE CHASE he was significantly upped in class and was found wanting, he finished 8th in the Hennessy and then pulled up in the Gold Cup. Well thought of in his stable, it is difficult to assess his class.

Chicago Grey

This progressive 8 year old won the NATIONAL HUNT CHASE CHALLENGE CUP at the festival last season before running 8th in the Scottish Grand National.
Disappointing U/R in his first start this season when well in contention and going really well. If he puts that behind him should be fit from the run and should run well.

Time For Rupert

A good hurdler who had a good novice season last year culminating in a good 5th in the very competitive RSA chase. Another progressive sort who could be in the shake up of this competitive event.

Acrai Rua

A nice horse but does not look up to this class of race.

Chief Dan George

Winner of the 2010 WILLIAM HILL TROPHY HANDICAP CHASE at the festival and aimed at longer distances. 17th in last years Grand national and he will probably have that as his target this season. Another who looks to have plenty to do in this.

The Selection is Diamond Harry N/R
