The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Ascot racecourse is home to The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday July 25th
This race is Britain's most prestigious open-age flat race, and is well contested by good horses. It has been a good betting race for the punters with favorite winning the last five years. It is fair to say that although it does not throw up surprises but good horses win the race and usually go on from the race to win more good prizes.
With 9 good horses in the line up this year and the smart Conduit at the head of the market this year we should again see a first class race.
Things today could be dominated by the favorite Conduit. The winner of one of last last seasons classics the St. Leger. Conduit is obviously the horse in the race with the most class. An obvious leader in the market and a horse that oozes class. Perhaps the reason that he is not a much sorter priced favorite is that he is yet to win this season .
In his first race over 1m2f he looked like the winner only to be caught on the line by Cima De Triomphe who subsequently was behind Conduit's 3rd place in the Coral-Eclipse at the same course (Sandown) five weeks later.
Although this does not look like his best form this season he looks to be right for this race, running over two furlongs further and the chosen ride by the stable jockey who had the pick of the three horses from the stable.
Tartan Bearer like Conduit is from the strong Michael Stoute stable, he looks a real good class horse who was second in last seasons Derby. He seems more in form than his stable mates. Starting the season with a group 3 win at Sandown, he followed this up with a good run in the Prince of Wales's Stakes where if not for hanging right he night have won the race.
Golden Sword Look to be the best of the O'Brien team that have been successful in the last two years. Fifth in this seasons "Epsom Derby" and is obviously a well thought of horse. Golden Sword is a three year old and only two three year olds have won in the last 10 running's which have been dominated by the four year old horses.
Look here Winner of last seasons Oaks over this distance and third in the St. Leger she is another who has a good chance in the race, but has not run up to her best form this season recording two third places albeit in group one races.
Ask the third of the Michael stoute team also looks a good horse, but being a six year old the stats are against this horse with only one other six year old, Swain winning the race in 1998 which was his second win having also won the race as a five year old. Ask is a good horse and could run well and a place would not be out of the question.
Frozen Fire The winner of the Irish Derby last season and another trained by A. O'Brien looks not to be the horse of last season with some lackluster performances this season. Alwaary is a good horse but will have to improve on known form to be in the shake up here.
Scintillo, Does not look to have the class to live with these horses and Rockhampton looks to be making up the numbers here.
